Skills Active

The role of Skills Active within the raft industry

Skills Active , the Sport Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation, is one of 40+ Industry Training Organisations (ITO) set up by the government in the 1992 Industry Training Act as part of the government’s tertiary education strategy. The ITOs cover a wide range of industries including retail, construction, hospitality, tourism and many other areas.

All ITOs have 3 government mandated roles:
• To set standards and create qualifications for industry (in consultation with industry)
• To facilitate workplace training
• To provide leadership for our industries

Skills Active works with a wide variety of workplaces and organisations across our sectors, which include sport, community recreation, outdoor recreation, snowsport, and Nga Mahi a Te Rehia.

Within the New Zealand rafting industry, Skills Active maintains the NZ Raft Guide qualification system including maintaining a register of guides assessors and registrars. Skills Active works with the rafting industry to ensure that the Guide Awards, and the systems behind them, meet the needs of the industry.

We look forward to continuing working with the raft industry to ensure that the qualifications reflect current needs and that the standards of assessment are consistent across the industry. In previous years we have been a sponsor of the river rescue workshops and we hope to continue with this involvement.
